Avon, The Gateway to the Genesee Valley, has been around since 1789 serving up plenty of hospitality when Gilbert and Maria Berry built a tavern and store there at the river on the now Rts. 5 & 20. The village is located on the same Routes 5 & 20 and is about 15 miles south of Rochester. Rt.15 and also I-390 runs thru the town. The population as per the 2000 census shows a town total of 6,443 including the village with 2,977.
Avon has a great school system and many new homes are being built each year, which shows that it is a growing community. There is a unique Central Park in the center of the village and is very impressive. Another landmark is the 5 Arch Bridge outside the village on Rt. 39 going towards Geneseo. This Limestone Bridge was built in 1856-1857 by the Genesee Valley R.R. and was 200' x 12' and spanned the Conesus Lake Outlet there.
One annual event that Avon sponsors is the Avon Corn Festival and this year 2007 is the 21st one with over 150 venders. There are many exhibits, games for the kids, and plenty of CORN.
The website for Avon is www.avon-ny.org and the school's site is www.avon-csd.k12.ny.us.
